Emergency Department Suture Team Full Time 36 hours/week

Summary:
The Suture Technician provides wound care and suturing of noncomplex wounds and supportive care of orthopedic injuries. They function as Physician Extenders and work in collaboration with Providers in the Emergency Room. The suture technician assists with (but is not limited to) laceration repair, abscess care, nail bed injuries, dental injuries, splinting/cast removal, and IV access. The Suture team at Akron and MV work directly with ED providers to do wound care and orthopedic care, but also assist with Ophthalmology, Surgery, Orthopedic and Plastic Surgery departments procedures.
Responsibilities:
* Reports to Nurse Manager of the assigned emergency department. * Provides wound care and suturing of noncomplex wounds and supportive care of orthopedic injuries.
* Provides wound care and suturing of noncomplex wounds and orthopedic injuries as delegated by and under the supervision of the attending physician. * Provides care to patients as delegated by and under the direction of the registered nurse. * Assists in the provision of patient and family education under the direction and supervision of a physician or Registered Nurse. * Participates in educational efforts of the department and unit. * Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the physical, psych/social, educational, and safety needs of the patients served regardless of age.
* Administers medication under the direction of the Emergency Department provider to include local anesthesia, vaccines, and immunizations.
* Other duties as assigned.
Other information:
Technical Expertise
1. Experience in suture is preferred.
2. Experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse [LPN], Paramedic, and/or Surgical Technician is required.
3. Current Health Care Provider BLS training from the American Heart Association is required.
Education and Experience
1. Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
2. Licensure and Certification:
a. Active certification or licensure as a Paramedic, Surgical Tech, LPN upon hire.
b. Within 6 months of hire candidate will need to complete approx. 100 hours classroom training (to include didactic training and orthopedic splint training) and approx. 560 hours of clinical training (to include 250 clinical cases and successful completion of the Suture Training Program objectives).
c. BLS
4. Years of relevant experience: 3 years is preferred.
