Job Summary
Provides a full range of primary health care services for women from adolescence beyond menopause to include primary care, gynecologic and family planning services, preconception care, care during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, care of the normal newborn during the first 28 days of life, and treatment of male partners for sexually transmitted infections in accordance with the American College of Nurse-Midwives and the Texas Board of Nursing scope of practice.
Essential Functions of the Role
Provides direct clinical services and management of mothers and babies as defined in the standing orders, policies, procedures and protocols for the certified nurse midwife to include direct prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum and/or well women patient services and primary care. Admits, manages and discharges patients.
Utilizes prescriptive privileges as allowed by the Texas Board of Nursing and regulatory requirements. Documents all prescriptions in the patient's medical record.
Obtains patient health histories and completes physical examinations. Documents findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings. Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests.
Performs approved therapeutic procedures based upon patients' clinical status. Explains the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patient, family, staff, and healthcare learners. Documents patient preparation and response to procedure(s).
Provides patient and family education and formulates and implements prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and interconceptional care.
Provides health promotion, disease prevention, and individualized wellness education and counseling in partnership with women and families in diverse settings such as ambulatory care clinics, private offices, community and public health systems, homes, hospitals and birth centers.
Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research. Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice. Incorporates clinical research findings in the development and implementation of standards of care.
Serves as an expert consultant to nursing, members of the healthcare team and to the larger community. Participates in and support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education. Enhances the body of knowledge of nursing or area of specialization through exchange of ideas and knowledge in professional organizations, oral presentations, posters, research activities, and written publications.
