Job Summary
The Well-being Officer for Care Teams is a newly established position at Denver Health aimed at guiding the organization towards a future where caregiver well-being is acknowledged, and both individual and systemic contributors to well-being are effectively addressed. This pivotal role is core to our journey of becoming the most trusted health care provider in Colorado and key to meeting goals outlined in our strategic plan. This position addresses the complex, interdependent factors impacting well-being among patient care teams and the efforts required to formulate solutions and interventions that take into account the broader context and underlying issues.
Emphasizing self-care and resilience, the role will play a central role in defining strategic priorities to advance well-being and reduce burnout among team members in our patient care environments, through a blended focus on individuals, teams, processes, and technology. In concert with senior leaders at Denver Health, the role will support operational excellence and enhanced communication, psychological safety, transparency, and trust by focusing on long-term sustainability and effective interventions to combat compassion fatigue, burnout, and occupational distress.
Essential Functions:
Assist caregivers and care teams - defined as all patient-facing roles - in reconnecting with their purpose and experiencing a sense of belonging and professional fulfilment. (0%)
Understand and define the current state of caregiver and care team well-being and burnout at Denver Health. • Identify root causes of burnout and suffering, sources of joy, and priorities for enhancing well-being in daily work of patient care. • Work collaboratively across organizational departments and disciplines to name and understand common workplace experiences impacting well-being (e.g., adverse events, occupational distress/moral injury, administrative burden, EHR burden). • Develop an organization-wide framework and action plan to advance caregiver and care team well-being and professional fulfillment. • Create a highly engaged Well-Being Task Force to shape and inform this work, including tactics to reinforce well-being initiatives. • Raise awareness through education on the impact of professional burnout among care team members. • Serve as internal expert on current and emerging best practices, including evidence-based interventions, to improve caregiver and care team well-being. • Identify and share models that advance self-compassion and a culture of well-being. • Create, expand, and strengthen peer-support programs. Support and guide clinical and operational leaders in: • Incorporating a focus on caregiver and care team well-being into their local culture and goals. • Adopting leadership practices that embrace two-way communication, psychological safety, and trust. • Prioritizing operational efforts in their areas that aim to improve care team well-being. Strengthen trust and transparency between practicing clinicians and administration. • Work with those providing patient care and administration to select and implement solutions and interventions focused on efficiency of practice, participatory management, and methods to enable caregivers to productively share their voice and experiences to enable positive, sustainable change related to well-being. • Foster a high-functioning health care environment where trust, respectful dialogue, and resilience transform challenges into opportunities for individual and team well-being, growth, and clinical excellence. Work closely with the Medical Staff Office, Quality and Safety, Nursing leadership, Human Resources, and other senior executives to develop organizational strategy, evaluate and influence programming and impact, create metrics, and establish access to funding and resources needed for support and improvement of care team well-being. Clinical Practice: responsible for maintaining a partial clinical practice. (0%)
Education:
Doctorate Degree and an active medical license in the state of Colorado. Required or
Master's Degree from a nationally accredited advanced practice training program and active license. Required
Degree in a health-related field such as psychology, social work, public health, or health administration. Preferred
Work Experience:
Extensive experience motivating others to change. Experience in healthcare leadership, and experience developing and managing programs. Required
2+ years of experience leading efforts to address caregiver and care team burnout and well-being in health care. Preferred
Licenses:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Seasoned leader who knows how to lead by influence and sustain positive change.
Knowledge of quality improvement work and methods.
Knowledge of current and future trends in health care, especially as these relate to well-being.
Thorough understanding of caregiver burnout and well-being and related impact on individual and organizational effectiveness.
