The Department of Pathology, Division of Laboratory Medicine, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a Board Certified or Board Eligible Commission on Accreditation in Clinical Chemistry (ComACC) trained clinical chemist (PhD) or pathologist (MD or MD/PhD) at the open rank of Assistant/Associate Professor.
The successful candidate will serve as the Associate Director of Clinical Chemistry with significant leadership opportunities in send-out testing, point of care testing, and diagnostic stewardship. In this role, the individual should either already have established national or international recognition in clinical chemistry or exhibit significant potential and motivation to establish an academic career in this field. The ideal candidate must have a strong interest in diagnostic stewardship and lab test utilization, with excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be passionate about providing a wide array of services in Clinical Chemistry including mass spectrometry and protein electrophoresis interpretation. Additional expectations include medical student, resident, and fellow education. There are ample opportunities to actively engage in team-based science as well as establish and drive a funded independent translational research program. Individuals with existing federal or industry-funded research program or a strong interest in establishing one are highly encouraged to apply. Individuals with a research interest in machine learning algorithms and the application of artificial intelligence to laboratory medicine are also encouraged to apply. Salary, rank, and tenure status are commensurate with experience and background.
Recruitment for this position comes at an opportune time, as the Section and Division are experiencing significant growth in their clinical service, educational, and research missions. The Chemistry Section serves UAB Hospitals (over 1,200 beds; the eighth largest in the USA), offering a wide array of diagnostic testing with cutting-edge automated platforms. Teaching responsibilities include medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as the opportunity to teach graduate students in the Graduate Biomedical Sciences program.
At the heart of UAB’s downtown campus, opportunities abound for research collaboration throughout the university. Unique research opportunities for an academic clinical chemist include: 1. Access to an impressive array of institutional research cores, offering cutting-edge resources and expertise to support groundbreaking research across disciplines. 2. Access to the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and large community of cancer biologists to pursue collaborative tumor marker research. 3. The presence of a large collaborative immunology research community and well-organized Immunology Institute with a solid research infrastructure including weekly research seminar series and pilot grants. 4. Access to the CLIA and CAP-accredited Lab Medicine Reference Lab with cutting-edge diagnostic equipment and personnel to assist in the rapid development and implementation of novel high complexity diagnostic assays, as well as the evaluation of novel commercial diagnostic platforms. 5. Significant Departmental and Divisional leadership support for Lab Medicine faculty to establish an independently funded translational research program including pilot grants.
A pre-employment background investigation is performed on candidates selected for employment. In addition, physicians and other clinical faculty candidates who will be employed by the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation (UAHSF) or other UAB Medicine entities must successfully complete a pre-employment drug and nicotine screen to be hired.
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and application packet including curriculum vitae, research interest/expertise, and the names of three references. Evaluation of applications will occur as they are received and will continue until the position is filled.
