Rush Oak Park Hospital, in Oak Park, Illinois, part of the Rush University System for Health network of hospitals, invites application for the position of Chief Medical Officer.
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Rush Oak Park Hospital (ROPH) will serve as a key member of the ROPH leadership team and will work closely with the team to guide and oversee the hospital’s strategic plan and operational objectives. The ROPH CMO plays a critical leadership role providing strategic direction, clinical expertise, and oversight to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care. The ROPH CMO will also collaborate with executive leadership, physicians, and other key stakeholders, and work with the System CMO office to oversee the development and implementation of clinical policies and protocols to ensure compliance and lead quality improvement initiatives. The ROPH CMO’s objective will be to lead and inspire the ROPH clinical leadership team to implement system-wide inpatient programs, processes, and initiatives to provide compassionate, comprehensive, high-quality, evidenced-based care, and service excellence.
The ROPH CMO serves as a liaison between administration and medical staff and has overall responsibility for the professional management of all clinical, educational, research, and administrative matters relating to the function of Medical Staff. The CMO will also fill the role of Physician, practicing medicine at a specified Rush University System for Health (Rush) medical practice site, promoting and providing high-quality medical care.
This role will report to the Rush System CMO with dotted line to the Chief Administrative Officer. The ROPH CMO will oversee the inpatient clinical operations of ROPH and will oversee surgical and critical care services. This leader will work closely with and build collaborative relationships with the Rush’s Chief Nursing Officer and the President, Rush Medical Group to advance system strategies, clinical practice, and patient-centered care initiatives.
Job Responsibilities
The successful individual will work effectively with leaders from within ROPH and across Rush to ensure and promote high-quality medical care at ROPH. The ROPH CMO provides leadership for teams to successfully drive consistent and targeted results in the areas of quality outcomes/indicators, patient/employee/physician satisfaction, patient safety and those efforts, which will ensure ROPH’s success under evolving performance-based reimbursement contracts. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
Establish self as a visible, approachable, trustworthy, team oriented, credible member of the ROPH leadership team with the medical staff, their formal and informal leadership, the Board, and other System stakeholders and employees.
Use Rush system policies and processes to develop and establish ROPH-based clinical functions through effective implementation of people, process, and technology changes to improve system performance and reduce costs.
Stay abreast and keep leadership teams and medical staffs apprised of industry of industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies to information strategic decision-making. Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements.
Foster a culture of Physician engagement, professionalism, and collaboration. Provide mentorship, coaching, and professional development opportunities to medical staff officers, department and committee chairs, and medical directors.
Foster and maintain a strong and positive working relationship with key clinical leaders across the System to support the elevation of nursing and other caregivers across the continuum of care delivery.
Work with clinical leaders across ROPH and Rush to embrace the use of data in ways that identify clinical variations in care. Develop processes to bring care teams together to implement evidence-based care to achieve quality and cost outcomes across Rush.
Keep the ROPH and Rush leadership teams apprised of improvement opportunities and progress against clinical performance goals.
Identify, coach, mentor, and support development opportunities for physician quality/safety champions.
Values, visibility and is engaged at all levels of a complex delivery system appreciating the varying cultures among system entities.
Listen and encourage the open expression of ideas and opinions and consistently emphasizing integrity and concern for all people.

In the role of Physician, the ROPH CMO will also be responsible for duties including but not limited to the following:
Participate in departmental and hospital committee meetings.
Practice in a manner consistent with their clinical privileges as identified and approved during the Credentials process.
Work collegially and cooperatively with the site medical director, section chief, other physicians, APPs, dentists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and any other medical professionals working within the medical facilities at applicable site.
Actively participate in discussions regarding the resolution of problems related to quality of care, patient safety issues and patient complaints/grievances arising at their site.
Responsible for maintaining utilization management and clinical practice standards through the application of the organization’s clinical criteria.
Participate in the development of medical/clinical policies and case consultation to clinical staff when asked.
Maintain the highest level of medical quality and service at Rush and represent the organization clinical philosophy to patients, providers, facility personnel, and the community.
Required Job Qualifications
MD or DO with licensure in the State of Illinois. Additional degrees, including MHA, MPH, MBA, are desirable but not required.
A valid and unlimited license in their practice area in any state in which the ROPH CMO provides services.
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive professional leadership experience is required.
A collaborative and accountable leadership approach with a track record of building interdisciplinary teams across a health system.
Credibility with employed and private practice physicians, as well as in academic and community settings.
A track record of senior administrative/operations experience in physician services/utilization management, clinical quality improvement, infection control, case management/social services, and medical staff development.
Proven skills at developing, nurturing and managing physician relations, and the ability to establish and expand professional alliances and close working relationships across a health system.
Working knowledge of current information technology used in patient care, finance and budget management, with ability to translate data into action plans and desired outcomes.
Demonstrated capabilities of hospital and health system-wide implementation of clinical information technologies including computerized physician order entry, electronic health records and community health information networks.
Demonstrated history of collaboration with managed care staff.
Experience working across clinical service lines and business units from a position of influence and with a high degree of transparency.
Skilled at communicating about and engaging others in organization-wide developmental efforts.
Knowledge of the key components of an effective measurement process, including the identification of key metrics and the use of data.
Knowledge of key regulatory issues that influence or impact quality and safety efforts.
Possesses an innovative, success-oriented personality to achieve and surpass objectives.
Energetic, adaptive, and flexible with challenges and changes.
Excellent communication and facilitation skills - interpersonal skills to affect, sell and manage change and growth. Skilled at interacting with broad, diverse groups.

Rush offers competitive total compensation that includes base pay, benefits, and other incentive programs for our employees. The total pay range shown reflects the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, knowledge and skills; relevant experience and training; education, certifications, and licensure; primary work location; and other business and organizational factors. This total pay range is for a full-time, 1.0 FTE employee, and includes any incentive payments that may be applicable to this role, as well as additional compensation such as sign-on and retention bonuses and relocation allowances.
