Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital is a full-service 70 bed community hospital offering a range of inpatient and outpatient services, with a strong emphasis on behavioral health, including inpatient psychiatry and medical detoxification. As part of Stony Brook Medicine, the hospital also provides emergency care, diagnostic imaging, specialty consultations, and rehabilitative services to meet the needs of the North Fork and Shelter Island communities.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH), with a dotted line to the Chief Nursing Officer of Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH), the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) will be responsible for the overall delivery and management of nursing professional practice, education, education, research, administration, and clinical services. The CNO will collaborate with clinical and administrative leadership to foster a patient-centered environment focused on exceptional clinical quality, safety, education, and research.

The CNO will be part of a talented leadership team working to strengthen SBELIH's role as a world-class healthcare provider in Suffolk County and Long Island, and to enhance its research and teaching mission.

As a member of the senior leadership team, the CNO will contribute to the strategic development of SBELIH and the broader Health System, partnering with physician leaders, the CAO, SBUH CEO, and others to address healthcare reform and coordinate system-wide growth across affiliates.

Key Responsibilities:

• Serves as a key member of the senior executive team, contributing to both strategic and operational planning. Leads and supports initiatives to communicate organizational goals to patient care staff, fostering alignment and driving positive cultural and behavioral change in support of the organization's strategic direction.

• Embraces and supports the culture of the organization and builds productive and collegial relationships across leadership and patient care provider teams.

• Provides leadership around a vision for superior patient centered care and service, evidence-based clinical decision making, and continuous improvement in quality and safety for patients; maintain accountability and metrics for measuring quality outcomes, as well as patient and family experience; ensure that such information is disseminated and acted upon to effect positive change.

• Reviews and updates standards for Nursing Practice supporting the Professional Practice Model. In collaboration with the SBUH CNO, defines nursing policies and procedures, and outcomes including:

• • Defined scope of practice
  • Defined standards of care based on research and/or evidence-based practice
  • System for competency determination and ongoing evaluation
  • Professional education and development
  • Policies and procedures
  • Staffing standards and resource allocation

• Evaluates the current nursing leadership structure at SBELIH, identifying individual and team competencies and development needs. Leverages these insights to strengthen leadership capabilities through strategic coaching, mentoring, and role modeling.

• In collaboration with Human Resources, develops a comprehensive workforce plan that prioritizes diversity, addresses the organization's evolving clinical needs, and provides strategic guidance on resource utilization, recruitment, retention, staff competencies, professional practice, nursing education, and the work environment for clinical staff.

• Leads the development and implementation of an integrated professional practice model that values the distinct contributions of each discipline and cultivates a cohesive, collaborative, interdisciplinary team focused on delivering patient- and family-centered care.

• Introduces evidence-based methods and clinical decision-making frameworks into care models, empowering practitioners to work at the top of their license and deliver high-quality care across the full continuum.

• Advances an interdisciplinary shared governance structure that enables effective clinical decision-making and supports high-performing teams.

• Establishes a culture of continuous learning within nursing practice, emphasizing interprofessional education, evidence-based care, team-based learning, professional growth, and autonomous practice.

• Applies knowledge, research, and evidence-based practices—and maintains a deep understanding of the Magnet Recognition Program—to design and implement initiatives that reflect a Magnet culture.

• Leads the strategic evolution of the Advanced Practice Nursing infrastructure, including credentialing, scope of practice, staffing models, productivity, continuing education, competency assessment, and clinical outcomes.

• Supports the organization's academic mission by promoting research and education within patient care teams and leadership; partners with the School of Nursing and other allied health programs to strengthen workforce development and promote skill advancement at all levels.

• Enhances internal and external relationships through effective communication and collaboration with clinical staff, the Schools of Medicine and Nursing, local and regional nursing associations, senior leadership, academic institutions, and the broader medical campus.

• Maintains strong partnerships with hospital leadership and physician teams, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to quality improvement and proactively identifying strategies to enhance patient experience, increase care value, and streamline practice.

• Develops robust, two-way communication strategies across the system to keep staff nurses informed and engaged in key strategic, operational, and financial decisions impacting patient care.

• Collaborates with union leadership to promote positive labor relations, workforce development, and a culture of adaptability in response to ongoing healthcare reform.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

• Masters Degree in a related field.

• Eligible for RN licensure in the state of New York.

• Ten or more years of nurse leadership experience in a hospital setting required.

• Strong operational and financial acumen with a track record of leading and partnering around a vision for improving health through clinical excellence and compassion.

• Strong conceptual clinical base with expertise in professional practice models, systems thinking and quality improvement.

• A highly effective leader who can sit at the executive table and relate to interdisciplinary teams of clinicians, specifically bedside caregivers.

• Strong executive presence and political savvy including communication skills that enable them to appreciate other's perspectives and offer compelling insights and recommendations.

• Experience championing an environment that rewards innovation, risk-taking and is viewed as a highly visible and effective leader.

• Experience with process improvement, leading teams, and managing organizational change initiatives. Proven ability of building internal and external relationships, with a demonstrated track record of working successfully with academic partners, physicians and physician leaders, and diverse management teams.

• Experience building partnerships with a School of Nursing and collaborating around the generation of new knowledge and education of future practitioners.

• Proven track record in the recruitment, retention and development of talent. Demonstrated experience creating a work environment that fosters diversity and inclusion.

• Experience building and sustaining a best practices oriented staffing model which includes working with human resources on recruitment, retention and engagement strategies.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced Certification in Behavioral Health or Psychiatry.
• Master's Degree in Psychiatric Nursing with five or more years of experience in a Psychiatric or Behavioral Health setting.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBEILH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
