DEPARTMENTAL SUMMARY: St. Charles Trauma & Acute Care Surgical Services currently employs surgeons board certified in surgical critical care with varying levels of experience as well as physician assistants and nurse practitioners. The current full-time commitment includes 156 clinical shifts. Surgeons are expected to comply with all Oregon State Trauma program requirements and expected to actively participate in quality improvement projects and community outreach education.
POSITION OVERVIEW: Surgeon is responsible for providing medical, surgical treatment, and follow up for patients treated with severe and life-threatening traumatic injuries, critical illness or emergency general surgery conditions. Surgeon will work with providers in other specialties, as needed, to stabilize and treat patients. Surgeon assesses and manages patients following established standards and practices.
Work schedule: Varied shift work in the hospital and in clinics that equates to 156 shifts per year for full time.
Shifts are comprised of day shifts and night shifts in the hospital or a day shift in the clinic. Currently, a hospital day shift is 7am-7pm and a hospital night shift is 6pm-7am providing an hour of overlap. Clinic shift hours vary with patient volume demands but do not exceed 8 am to 8 pm.
Back-up shifts, either day or night in the hospital follow the same hours but are only reimbursed and counted toward the annual shift requirement if the surgeon is called in and works more than 6 hours. A surge shift occurs when the surgeon is called in and works less than six hours, which does not count toward the annual shift requirement.
Call expectation: Primary night call and back up call is evenly distributed and typically includes 2-4 primary night shifts per month.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: (May perform additional duties of similar complexity within SCHS as required or assigned)
Clinical Duties:
Examines, diagnoses, and surgically treats critically injured patients and patients with emergency general surgery conditions.
May perform emergency procedures including endotracheal tube intubation, tube thoracostomy, resuscitative thoracotomy, pericardiocentesis, ultrasonographic evaluation, peritoneal lavage, and massive transfusion.
Performs patient examinations, obtains and records pertinent medical history, subjective, and objective findings.
Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures. Interprets and integrates data to determine diagnosis, and therapeutic plan.
Administers and prescribes medications in compliance with state law and practice guidelines.
Orders and performs appropriate medical and surgical procedures in accordance with State law and practice guidelines.
Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatments.
Educates patients regarding health, illness and injury prevention, and healing. Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, documenting clearly and concisely.
Triages patient telephone calls, providing consultation as needed.
Communicates effectively with colleagues, patients, physicians, and administration. Maintains quality of clinical practice by selecting appropriate avenues for professional growth. Maintains CME requirements and certifications per trauma center and State requirements.
Participates in and supports quality and performance improvement activities; identifies areas and functions where patients, staff, and physicians need information.
Medical performance issues will be directed to the medical director of the service.
May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.

Keeps all licenses and appropriate certifications current and unrestricted to maintain privileges at a St. Charles Health System hospital sufficient to permit performance of job duties.

Maintains compliance with hospitals Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations, as required by SCHS Board of Directors.
Administrative Expectations:

EDUCATION
Required:
Graduation from an accredited medical school.
Successful completion of an accredited residency program in General Surgery.
Successful completion of additional educational programs necessary to enable Physician to acquire and maintain privileges to perform the range of services contemplated. This includes board eligibility/certification in the specialty being practiced.
Complete annual fire/safety, etc. education in-services as required.
Attend mandatory educational offerings as described in SCHS policies/procedures and/or as required by other regulatory bodies.
Complete annual CME as required to maintain license and appropriate Board certification. Complete in a timely manner assigned Computer Based Learning modules.
Preferred:
Fellowship training and board certification in Surgical Critical Care.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
Required:
Current license as MD / DO.
Board certified or eligible in General Surgery. Those applicants who are not board certified at the time of application but who have completed their residency or fellowship training are required to become board certified within seven years of residency or fellowship training.
Unrestricted Federal DEA number.
Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid, or other federal or state governmental health care programs.
Valid drivers license and the ability to meet SCHS driving requirements. Current BLS certification.
Current ACLS and ATLS certification.
If provider will practice sedation, moderate or deep, ACLS certification is also required.
Additional certifications may be required based on privileges granted to provider by Medical Staff Services at SCHS Inpatient locations.
Preferred:
Current unrestricted Oregon Medical License.
EXPERIENCE
Required:
Experience using EMR (Electronic Medical Records) software.
Advanced written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse population and professionally represent St. Charles Health System.
Experience working in a team environment and proven ability to collaborate, manage facilitation and consensus building among health care professionals and agencies to achieve expected results.
Preferred:
Epic EMR software experience
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
GENERAL
Must have excellent communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population and professionally represent SCHS.
Strong team working and collaborative skills. Ability to multi-task and work independently. Attention to detail.
Excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication and customer service skills, particularly in dealing with stressful personal interactions.
Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Electronic Medical Record systems. Intermediate in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel).
