Northwell Health is seeking an experienced physician executive to join their world-class team at Phelps Hospital as Chief Medical Officer.
To be successful, the Chief Medical Officer must exhibit a relationship-based and collaborative approach to partnering with key constituency groups in and outside the Hospital. The Chief Medical Officer will be a physician leader with strong leadership and clinical credibility with a commitment to high quality healthcare delivery and fostering an integrated and cohesive medical staff. This physician leader will have a passion for excellence, be well respected among his/her colleagues and possess superior interpersonal and communication skills. They will have an ability to collaborate within all levels of a complex organization and have a high-level understanding of the trends and needs within a highly regarded complex care community hospital. The Chief Medical Officer will be skilled in relating to employed and voluntary physicians within this highly matrixed healthcare organization. The Chief Medical Officer will advance a strong culture of team building and mentoring and will work collaboratively with the medical staff, residents, nursing, hospital leadership and all other disciplines to help assure the delivery of high quality, effective, efficient and patient-centered care.
In addition to key operational leadership responsibilities, the successful CMO will possess the strategic acumen to partner with Phelps’ SVP, President, and leadership team, in:
fostering and enhancing strong physician leadership and engagement
strategic expansion, particularly in the areas of cancer services, surgery, neuroscience, digestive health and mother/baby services
elevating the quality of practice throughout the institution.
The Chief Medical Officer will partner with patient care services leadership in optimizing Phelps’ patient care model. The Chief Medical Officer role includes day-to-day oversight of both direct and indirect reports. Through direct oversight, the CMO is responsible for 300+ FTEs and an annual budget in excess of $41M.
Location: Phelps Hospital is located in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Relocation to the Westchester or Greater NY Metropolitan area is required for this role.
Major Responsibilities and Key Competencies
Lead and support strong physician engagement
In partnership with the hospital SVP, President, lead efforts in the strategic expansion of key clinical services such as surgery, cancer services, neuroscience services, digestive health and, mother/baby services.
Collaborate with departmental chairs and clinical leaders to elevate the quality of practice throughout the institution
Advance a shared vision for a strategic plan to achieve patient satisfaction, quality, efficiency, team engagement, operational goals and program growth for the hospital, linking to the overall regional and health system’s goals.
Maintain effective communication with the medical staff, administration, and all other hospital departments to ensure cohesion in strategy and operations across the Phelps Campus.
Foster an aligned and collaborative culture among physicians, and between physicians, nursing, and administration to allow the organization to realize its strategic vision, maximize success, and move forward in a sustainable manner.
Partner with Patient and Family Experience to drive improvements with HCAHPS, OASCAHPS and ED CAHPS results.
Participate in value-based care improvement efforts, specifically focused on improvement in the CMS STARS program.
Attend local Medical Leadership Committee (MLC) and greater Phelps Hospital Article 28 Medical Board meetings.
Identify opportunities and collaborate in hospital-wide performance improvement programs including planning of systematic and strategic goals, and objectives for the measurement, assessment, and improvement of patient care.
Help create and enhance multidisciplinary clinical and professional standards, measuring and monitoring protocols and helping to ensure process and outcomes that demonstrate high clinical and organizational performance. Play a key role in catalyzing the efforts around clinical compliance.
Lead standards and a culture of caring, innovation, teamwork, integrity, and quality.
Provide an integrating force linking all aspects of hospital care utilization, quality and safety, credentialing, physician practice evaluation.
Influence provider clinical behavior to ensure outstanding performance in the areas of Compliance, Utilization Management, and Capacity Management.
Unite, motivate, and inspire a diverse group of physician faculty members and partner with department chairs and division chiefs on recruitment, retention, promotion, development, and recognition of a world-class clinical staff.
Spearhead physician acceptance of transparent performance improvement metrics and of working in partnership with nurses and case managers.
Grow employee engagement. Ensure that communications and interactions reflect the hospital and health system’s expectations standards and a culture of caring, innovation, teamwork, integrity, and quality.
Monitor dashboards for quality measures ensuring care meets quality standards of excellence.
Partners with patient care services leadership for the appropriateness, timeliness, and effectiveness of all Quality Management and Performance Improvement initiatives related to the hospital, and medical staff.
Support diversity and inclusion among the Hospital’s staff, faculty, and trainees.
Attend and actively participate in the Phelps Community Board meetings
With a patient-centered culture, the Chief Medical Officer will provide a positive experience to the community by participating in the building, planning, executing, and reporting on philanthropy efforts. Such elements include donor acquisition, annual giving programs, special events, major gifts/capital campaigns, and planned giving, as well as managing a portfolio of prospects.
Build and strengthen the necessary community-based, regional, and national professional organizations, health related organizations, alumni, and other constituencies. Collaborate with other community organizations on programs that promote the health and well-being of the community.
Requirements and Ideal Experience
The new Chief Medical Officer at Phelps Hospital will possess the following qualifications:
Possess a medical degree from an accredited medical school and appropriate board certification.
At least ten years of progressive leadership experience serving in a physician, executive, or leadership role is highly desirable.
Experienced leader who can clearly and comfortably communicate and collaborate with all levels of key stakeholders in and out of the Phelps campus.
Possess or be eligible for a medical licensure in the State of New York.
An advanced degree in healthcare administration or a related field is preferred but not required.
