Role Overview:

Key Qualifications:

Imaging

Time: 70%

Performs all radiographic examinations accurately, completely and efficiently, checking technical quality and submits completed exams for physician review.
Performance Expectations:
* Reviews all exam orders for patient history, types of procedures, type of patient; identifies any duplicate requests or other errors or omissions and verifies with radiologist and/or requesting physician.
* Identifies patient according to hospital protocol.
* Performs all procedures completely per departmental protocol.
* Sets imaging parameters to ensure that proper technical settings are selected for each area of interest.
* Produces image with sufficient resolution, density, and penetration including the complete area of interest to provide required diagnostic information.
* Identifies problems with image/exam quality; determines causes and the need to repeat procedures.
* Evaluates imaging console/image to assure that requested areas of interest are covered; determines whether or not to review with radiologist or requesting physician to determine the need for additional views of suspicious areas.
* Reviews images for quality, orientation, and image information.
* Annotates and verifies images where appropriate according to department policy in PACS to ensure proper identification and quality.
* Submits information to PACS
* Anticipates potential interferences and directs patients accordingly to avoid problems (e.g., removal of prostheses, jewelry, potential artifacts).
* Averages no more that 4% repeat annually.
* Averages no more than 4 validated MD rejections annually.

Data Management

Time: 20%

Prepares accurate records and enters required data into appropriate computer system.
Performance Expectations:
* Performs manual equipment checks daily, and documents results on checklist.
* Enters orders correctly into RIS (e.g., account number, requesting physician, and service).
* Tracks all patients accurately through the R.1.S. system.
* Modifies exam orders when appropriate.
* Selects correct procedure number from patient work list.
* Manually enters all patient information completely and accurately into work list to ensure selection of the requested radiology exam.
* Follows all applicable departmental and institutional policies and procedures related to billing. Participates in and promotes the prevention, detection, and resolution of instances of noncompliance with departmental and institutional billing policies and procedures.

Care for the Environment / Quality Control

Time: 5%

Maintains a neat, clean, safe environment; performs quality control tests as assigned.
Performance Expectations:
* Boots up computerized x-ray equipment (53rd Only) and performs machine warn up and quality control tests daily.
* Conducts quality assurance tasks (e.g., cassette and plate cleaning, printer sensitrometry, etc.), as assigned (53rd Street only).
* Operates and maintains all equipment according to procedures; reports malfunctions requiring more than routine collection to supervisor immediately.
* Maintains commonly used equipment and areas (e.g., returns grids and patient position aides to appropriate areas; wipes up spills).
* Prepares room for each patient; wipes table mats/pads, changes linen, and restocks cassettes and rooms between each patient.
* Checks that patient rooms, common equipment, and areas are neatly and cleanly maintained, and that rooms are appropriately stocked with supplies.
* Utilizes appropriate service logs when reporting equipment malfunctions.
* Alerts supervisor when conditions (e.g., systems, supplies, equipment) that have the potential to have a negative impact on patient safety are identified.

Education

Time: 5%

Instructs new employees and students on routine procedures, as assigned (following the eight week department orientation).
Performance Expectations:
* Explains and demonstrates required procedures including both technical and communication skills; provides explanations on an appropriate level of detail.
* Provides feedback to supervisor on students'/ trainees' progress and makes recommendations when observing a performance problem or when asked.
* Instructs new employees on routine and complex procedures.
* Acts as preceptor for at least one student annually; assists in the implementation of the departmental orientation and training plans, and monitors the progress of staff (Main Campus Only).
* Refers to and instructs trainees on appropriate resources/operation manuals.
* Assesses each competency performed by trainees and provides specific feedback and remedial training, as needed (Main Campus Only).
* Presents information on cases, diseases, etc. at an in service to refresh and further the knowledge of all staff members at least once per year.
* Attends scheduled in-services unless excused by supervisor.
