The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a licensed - credentialed - and privileged Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) who functions as an independent provider in the Emergency Department (ED) at the New Mexico VA Healthcare System.

Duties

• Working in collaboration with ED physicians and interdisciplinary staff - the APP performs histories - physical exams - diagnostics - therapeutic procedures - and medical decision-making within their defined scope of practice
• The APP provides evidence-based care - participates in triage and timely patient disposition - and ensures safe transitions of care
• The role includes clinical coverage of the main ED - Fast Track - ED Observation (CDU) - and occasional TeleUrgent Care services within VISN 22
• The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) reports professionally and clinically to the Chief of Emergency Medicine or designated supervising physician
• The APP functions independently within their approved Scope of Practice - clinical privileges - and applicable VHA guidelines
• While the APP is authorized to evaluate - diagnose - treat - and manage patients independently - complex or high-risk cases may be discussed in real time with the attending physician or Emergency Medicine leadership as clinically indicated
• The APP is expected to exercise sound clinical judgment - operate with a high degree of autonomy - and collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary team members
• The incumbent's clinical performance and documentation will be reviewed in accordance with VA policy - local peer review processes - and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) standards
• The APP may receive additional administrative or operational guidance from the Emergency Department Nurse Manager - Assistant Chief - or designated service line leaders as appropriate
