Summary:
The Physiatry APP is responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centered care to hospitalized patients requiring physiatry consultation. The APP will work in collaboration with attending physiatrists, hospitalists, surgeons, therapists, nursing staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to optimize patient function, support recovery, and coordinate discharge planning. This role emphasizes comprehensive assessment, development of rehabilitation-focused care plans, and communication across specialties to ensure safe and effective patient transitions. Operates in accordance with Section 4723.431 of the Ohio Revised Code and rule adopted by the Board of Nursing for Advanced Practice Nurses, the national board certifying agency, and maintains a Standard Care Arrangement with a collaborating physician(s) on the medical staff.
Responsibilities:
Perform comprehensive health assessments of patients presenting Physiatry, including detailed medical histories, physical examinations, and developmental assessments.
Assess functional status, rehabilitation potential, and physiatric needs of patients.
Develop and implement evidence-based care plans in collaboration with the supervising physiatrist.
Provide recommendations for therapy intensity, equipment needs, mobility, spasticity management, and other rehabilitation interventions.
Assist with coordination of inpatient rehabilitation admissions, including pre-admission screenings.
Monitor patient progress, adjust care plans as needed, and facilitate interdisciplinary communication.
Serve as a liaison between the physiatry service, referring providers, and inpatient care teams.
Collaborate with physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, case management, and social work to ensure comprehensive patient care.
Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and family meetings to support shared decision-making.
Perform injections (e.g., trigger point, joint, or spasticity-related) under supervision or per credentialing guidelines.
Assist in managing spasticity, pain, and other functional impairments as indicated.
Other information:
Education & Licensure
Master's or Doctorate degree in Nursing (NP) or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
Current state license as Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
National certification (ANCC, AANP, or NCCPA).
Current BLS/ACLS certification required.
Experience
Minimum 1-2 years of APP experience preferred (rehabilitation, hospital medicine, neurology, orthopedics, or related field desirable).
Experience in inpatient consultation or acute care strongly preferred.
