So you’ve entered your info into all the required fields and uploaded your resume. Congratulations! You’re now one of hundreds of faceless applicants the company has on file. Not exactly the best way to land a job.

Separate yourself from the field by connecting person-to-person with the ones who make hiring decisions. Start by scheduling a quick call with an internal recruiter, or one of your would-be peers at your chosen organization. By simply talking to someone, you’ll go from just another name on a resume to a real person worth extra consideration.


3. Tailor your resume (and online profile) to each job.


Most people agonize over every word of their resume. The downside to that is, they’re often hesitant to change anything once they feel like it’s perfect. But remember: even the best resume isn’t one-size-fits-all.

How sad would it be to make it past the application stage, ace several rounds of tough interviews, and put yourself in a perfect position to land your dream job… only to lose it after all the hard parts are done?

It happens more often than you think — and it’s all because people forget the easiest rule of all: Say thank you. By simply emailing a heartfelt note of gratitude to each of your interviewers a few hours after you leave, you show that you truly appreciate their consideration. Not sending a thank-you? That gives the exact opposite impression.
