Most veteran nurses will tell you that they wish they'd had just a few more key insights before they launched their career. There's much to be said for learning on the job, but it's also extremely helpful to have a few words of wisdom to guide your way, particularly in a field as challenging as nursing.

Here are just a few pieces of valuable advice.

“Seek out a mentor — someone you admire that could help coach you as you progress in your career.”
- Maureen Swick, Systems Nurse Executive, Carolinas Health System, Former CEO of AONE and SVP, CNO of the American Hospital Association (AHA)

“Communicate with your fellow nurses. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, help a colleague, seek sound solutions together and be open to learning from others.”
- Georgia Elmassian, President, International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Nurses (ISPAN)

“Learning and gaining experience takes time. Be gentle and patient with yourself.”
- Clareen Wiencek, President, American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN)
