Chicago Area Healthcare Recruiters Annual Conference

  • Article by:Health Career Center
Thumbnail hosted the 2016 Annual Chicago Area Healthcare Recruiters (CAHR) Conference earlier this month in our American Hospital Association (AHA) offices in Chicago, Ill. CAHR, a local chapter of the National Association of Health Care Recruitment, connects recruiters in the Chicagoland area and inform them of the latest issues and trends in healthcare recruiting.

Attendees discussed relevant topics such as social media and recruitment, millennials in the workforce, hospital and system mergers and the effect on recruitment and structuring, and new ideas to attract, recruit, and retain talented healthcare workers.

Approximately 40, healthcare human resource professionals attended and spent the day talking and networking amongst peers and colleagues. Attendees heard presentations from the following:

  • American Hospital Association ( – Workforce Trends & New Roles in Today’s Value-Based Healthcare
  • HealthCareSource – Recruit for Higher Nurse Retention
  • Seyfarth Shaw LLP – Legal Updates, Recaps, and Hot Button Issues
  • SkillSurvey – How HR Can Influence the HCAHPS Score

Turnover was a hot topic throughout the conference. In fact, according to Healthcare Source, ¾ of all turnover happens within the first year. One hospital mentioned they do “candidate shadowing” as part of their interview process. The hospital finds it very helpful in identifying fit and it gives both the candidate and the employer a change to experience the role before accepting an offer. By bringing candidates in and allowing them to shadow a peer in their field, they can get a better feel for the expectations, environment and what it’s like to work in that role. It also helps with onboarding as candidates have already seen a glimpse of a “day in the life.”

While recruiting is as busy as ever, CAHR wanted to remind all attendees to rush less and play more, despite the ever-growing challenges in healthcare recruitment.
